Why I’ll skip iPhone 14 and stick with my mini for another year

Why I’ll skip iPhone 14 and stick with my mini for another year

Apple will discontinue the iPhone mini, but the one that is rumored to be its replacement does not appeal to me enough to give up my beloved little mobile.

I’m not here to bury the iPhone mini, but to praise it. If the rumors are true, the iPhone 13 mini will be the last in its lineup and will be replaced by a larger iPhone 14 Max this fall. And as someone who owns and loves an iPhone 13 mini, this makes me sad.

It seems that not enough people share my love for the iPhone 13 mini for Apple to update it for the iPhone 14 generation. Never mind: the iPhone 13 mini is a great device. So wonderful that I suspect its design has not yet come to an end.

Praise of the little

There’s no denying it: people love big phones. The iPhone experienced tremendous growth at a time when Apple made it bigger with the iPhone 6 generation. The sales figures seem to bear this out.

I’m not going to deny that my love of smaller phones makes me a pretty unique iPhone buyer.

But… do people really like big phones? I think they love big screens that show more information and play bigger movies. I’m not sure you’ll like the extra weight, the extra bulk, the extra size in your pocket, but it’s worth it all for that big, bright screen.

Every year, I have the privilege of being able to test all iPhones for reviews as part of my job. And over the last two years, I’ve found myself going back to the design of the iPhone mini over and over again.

First of all, it’s a non-Pro iPhone. And although some may disagree, I think that, in the iPhone 12 and 13 generations, the design of the iPhone Pro has been worse than that of the non-Pro models.

From the bright colors on the back of the devices to the gorgeous anodized aluminum frame, always give me the iPhone 13 mini over a more boring iPhone 13 Pro.

The iPhone 6c will have more battery and RAM than the 5c

At 131.5mm tall and 64.2mm wide, it’s small (meaning it fits nicely in my hand and pocket) and yet has a 5.4″ screen that’s perfectly capable of give enough space for apps.

It’s a look reminiscent of the iPhone 5 era, my favorite era of iPhone design. But the iPhone mini screen is much larger than the iPhone 5, thanks to the use of Face ID.

And while the battery life of the iPhone mini is undoubtedly less than other iPhones, I have to point out that Apple did a great job of increasing the battery life in the iPhone 13 models. The battery life of the iPhone 12 Mini was a bit sparse, honestly. The one with the iPhone 13 mini? No problem.

Yes, if you’re using an iPhone mini, you’ll miss out on some key features of the Pro models. I’m currently using an iPhone 13 Pro with a beta of iOS 16, and it constantly reminds me that cheaper phones don’t have ProMotion or that extra camera on the back part.

And yet every time I hold the larger phone in my hand or put it in my pocket, I’m put off by its size. Why carry a brick in your pocket if you don’t have to?

“He’s Dead, Jim”

But this is beside the point, right? Everything indicates that we will never have the iPhone 14 mini. After praising the mini, I have to bury it. But… will I really do it?

“Super powerful”, the new promotional announcement of the iPhone 6s

First of all, we are going to talk about the information that the iPhone 14 series will only have the new A16 processor in the Pro models. That means that the standard models of the iPhone 14 would not only have no access to the rumored innovations, like the always-on screen, but also they would not be faster than the 2021 models.

I’m sure Apple will introduce some improvements to the iPhone 14 models that will see them slightly edge out the iPhone 13 in terms of specs, but this is potentially the least impressive iPhone update in years.

And that also means that the iPhone 13 mini will be more or less a current phone for another year. I’m content.

And then there’s the future: I really think the iPhone mini design will come back. One possibility is that Apple simply alternates between iPhone models so that the mini appears one year and the Max the next. It’s also not impossible that Apple will revert to the mini design every few years, as it clearly has a following, but not many.

Then there is the iPhone SE, of which the third generation was recently introduced. Using the iPhone mini as the basis for a new iPhone SE would make sense, since the iPhone mini is superior to the current SE in every way. Although it is slightly smaller, it has a larger screen, support for Face ID and a second rear camera.

The truth is, the iPhone mini is too good a product (and size) for Apple to ignore completely. I’m still sad that it’s apparently not popular enough to deserve a new version every year, but I refuse to believe that this is the end of it.

In the meantime, I’ll be holding on to my iPhone 13 mini and waiting for the inevitable return of the mini.
