It is confirmed, a laptop for each primary school student
Much has been said about this issue since the news broke that the Spanish Government was working on an ambitious plan to modernize education systems through the provision of computer equipment and other measures.
Today, the day on which the debate on the State of the Nation is being held, was when José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was expected to give more information about the plan, as it has finally happened. The president of the Government announced in the aforementioned debate the implementation of this plan which will endow each primary school student with a laptop, wireless Internet connection and digital whiteboards in the classrooms.
The initiative will begin to be applied in September and for the 2009/2010 academic year The more than 420,000 fifth-grade students in public and concerted schools will be provided with a personal computer for each one, a measure that will be progressively extended until reaching the last year of secondary school.
On the subject of financing It will be the Autonomous Communities who, with the collaboration of the central government, will have to deal with the expenses of the new plan. The question that has remained in the air is to know what operating system the laptops will have, whether Windows or Linux. The Executive has declared that no guidelines have been given in this regard and therefore it will be the different Autonomous Communities who will decide what to do.
