You'll need to upgrade from the original Super Mario Maker if you want to create maps. Nintendo has warned that course downloads will no longer work for the Super Mario Maker game on Wii U starting March 31, 2021. If you want to create a ridiculously difficult level or share courses with your friends, you'll need to use Super Mario Maker 2 on the 'Switch.

Super Mario Maker without downloading on Wii U, what will happen

Nintendo didn't explain why it was reducing the level. You can still play the courses after cutting, but the game clearly loses value when you can't share your creations with others. It's not a surprising decision, at least. The Wii U wasn't as successful as the Switch, and may have had a limited audience for SMM even at the game's peak in 2015, let alone for the next five years.

It can be costly for Nintendo to maintain servers for a game that isn't very successful, especially when many of those fans may have moved on to the Switch-based sequel.

Starting March 31, it will no longer be possible to download courses in #SuperMarioMaker for #WiiU. Please see the link below for more information. Thank you to all players for supporting the Wii U version of Super Mario Maker since 2015! http://t.co/aPtUh8QVd6 pic.twitter.com/bZahjD3yK7

This will allow you to connect the levels together, which it was already possible to create with the previous version of the software. It will be possible to build up to 8 worldsfor a maximum of 40 levels in total. So now, in essence, it will be possible build a complete Super Mario gametotally playable for those who create it and you can share with all other users.
