Italian GT Championship 2020, the Sprint arrives at Mugello
Mugello is the circuit where this season began, on 18-19 July with the Endurance races. Stefano Comandini and Marius Zug took to the track behind the wheel of BMW M6 GT3while Francesco Guerra and Simone Riccitelli they drove the BMW M4 GT4.
From Saturday’s qualifying it was clear that the weekend would be challenging. In Q1 Comandini set the fifth fastest time on one wet track using slick tires. Riccitelli grabs the second time in GT4. Q2, on the other hand, is disputed on wet with rain tires. The first riders on the track avoided the heavy rain, the others were less fortunate. Zug finishes eighth in GT3, Guerra finishes fourth in GT4.
In race one Comandini got off to a good start, finishing third at the San Donato. A contact at the Luco-Poggio Secco exit with Agostini, an Audi driver, forced him to restart from the bottom. A comeback overtaking caused a spin, slowing the pace. Zug continued to recover but the team arrived away from the scoring area. The GT4 was also complicated by the entry twenty minutes from the end of the safety car but Guerra-Riccitelli finished third.
In the race two Comandini-Zug drove at their best, recovering and closing fifths. In GT4, Guerra and Comandini alternated in an epochal comeback, moving from fourth place to first. A great choice of timing of pit stop brought the second victory of the season after the first race in Misano.
The 2020 Italian GT Championship Sprint returns on 17 and 18 October in Monza.
