BMW 2 Series Coupe, the smallest Bavarian sports car, totally changes outside, inside and under the hood

We had introduced the new BMW 2 Series Coupe a few weeks ago, with the release of the first still camouflaged images of the German sportswoman. Today, however, the House of Monaco unveils the new generation of its purest sports car. Traction is still rearthe engines, petrol and diesel, start from 184 up to 374 CV and the line evolves the typical BMW stylistic features, referring to the famous 02 Series of the 70s and giving up the huge double kidneys. What else does this new BMW 2 Series Coupe hide? Let’s find out together.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupé is already talking about: no XXL kidneys, references to 02 and proportions of a real BMW

Although all mid-sized BMWs have switched to the front-wheel drive UKL platform, from the 1 Series to the X1 and X2 to the 2 Series Gran Coupe 4-door coupe, the new “smooth” 2 Series does not change tradition. It therefore remains a true pure sports car, with rear-wheel drive and lots of driving pleasure. Although on paper it is the perfect BMW for driving purists, the new BMW 2 Series is already doing it discuss on a hot topic in the BMW world: the line.

Sony “retires” Killzone.com but is it the end of the series or a new Killzone on PS5?

Contrary to the “I knowrellona “4 Series and the M3 and M4 sports cars, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé does without the huge double kidneysporting a split grille, symbol of BMW design, thinner and developed in width. A return to the past, with a double kidney pattern reminiscent of that of the previous BMW 4 Series, the F32. If this is good for purists who dislike the XXL double kidney, the angular and modern design of the frontwhich leaves a little surprised at first glance.

The headlights in fact do not have the usual horizontal and subtle gait, but rather they are triangular and compacts. According to BMW, this look is a homage to the House’s first compact coupe, the 02 Series from the 1960s and 1970s, with the 2002 Tii, the true progenitor of all-to-drive BMW coupes. And in fact the real body light of the lighthouseobviously full LEDis roundjust to remember the “look” of the 2002. Under the headlights, then, we find two important triangular air intakeswhich give the front a very modern look, but also very different from the previous BMW Coupé, more elegant and traditional. The long, low bonnet is beautiful and traditionalwith a prominent hump in the center to make room for the longitudinal engines.

The sight lateral will be the peacemaker for those who think this 2 Series Coupe has gone a little further. The side is in fact typically BMWwith the very long bonnet, the passenger compartment gathered and resting on the rear axle and lines clean and linear. Can not miss the rear window equipped with the legendary Elbow of Hoffmeisterthe upward and then backward trend of the window line typical of every BMW, and one short and collected tailas per tradition on all the compact coupes of the House.

And coming right in tail you find again a look a little different than usual. Instead of grasping the design language of the new 4 Series, with thin, horizontal headlights and a slim, crouching line, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé takes an almost retro approach. I’ll explain. The tail is in fact rather high and truncatedwith a small hint of the third volume and, for the first time in several years, of the squared headlights. We haven’t seen square headlights on a BMW Coupe since the E46, which went out of production in 2005. This elongated and squat shape wants to be again a reference to the 02 Series, which sported similar headlights, square and very far from the center of the car. Nice hint of a spoiler on the tailgate, and the black fascia helps to streamline a rather stubby tail.

It is a look halfway between homage and modernity, with proportions and lines we were no longer used to. The whole is pleasant and sporty, but it needs a period of adaptationespecially at the level of tail, perhaps a little too Japanese in the lines. What do you think about it? Does it convince you after reviewing the photos? Or did you like it right away? Let us know in the comments!

The interior and the mechanical base are the same as those of the BMW 4 Series: rear or all-wheel drive, technology and efficiency

Taking a look atinternal, we see how the originality in the exterior lines of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé has not been transferred to the interior. The entire cockpit is indeed derived directly from the larger BMW 3 Series and 4 Series: a beautiful business card in every respect. Both BMW 3 Series and 4 Series have in fact been appreciated globally for the quality and workmanship of the interiors, and seeing them on a “small” 2 Series can only please.

The lines are very classic in the BMW world, with the large cantilevered infotainment screen that dominates. The operating system is the new and improved iDrive seventh generation, complete and totally renewed, also equipped with OTA updates. The passenger compartment is then divided into two distinct parts by the huge central tunnel, which houses many commands, the ignition button, the physical controls of the iDrive and the automatic gearshift lever, which we will talk about shortly. Not even the digital instrument panelassisted by the classic multifunctional “chubby” steering wheel from the Bavarian manufacturer. The space available also seems quite generous, also because under the body we find the largest Series 4.

Go through quarantine like the BMW drivers

The platform on which the new BMW 2 Series Coupé rests is in fact the modular CLAR platform, used by models from the 3 Series up. It is a very modern, light and quite rigid floor, which also offers a lot of space inside, in the BMW world. For this sharing with the bigger sister, BMW 2 Series grows a lot. Now, the smallest coupe of the House is 10 cm longer than before and exceeds the threshold of 4 meters and 50, reaching 4.53 meters. Compared to the previous Series 2, the new is also 6 cm widerreaching 1.83 me 3 cm lower“Going down” to 1 meter and 39.

However, these dimensions go hand in hand with one torsional stiffness which increases by 12% compared to the already excellent 2 Series chassis, while the weight distribution is still perfect, 50% behind and 50% in front. The pace then remains compact, stopping at 2 meters and 74, 5 cm more than before. BMW 2 Series Coupe then it should be more stable and precise, but no less agile. Certainly, however, it is more practical than butthe. The trunk remains stable a 390 liters, an excellent result. To improve, however, there is theusabilitywith a 3.5 cm lower load threshold, and the practicalitywith the rear sofa that can be folded down with the 40/20/40 scheme.

The engines of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé: two petrol and a mild hybrid diesel up to 374 hp. And it’s only automatic

We’ve talked about torsional stiffness and pitch, and now it’s time to get to know the mechanics of BMW 2 Series Coupe. Available with both rear and all-wheel drive on the more powerful M240i (with an unbalanced distribution, obviously, on the rear), The new BMW 2 Series Coupe offers a lot of technology from its big sister 4 Series. In addition to the virtuous endowment of ADAS of the latest generation that allow autonomous driving of Level 2, Series 2 inherits many technologies aimed at performance.

Which? First of all, on the front we have a classic pattern Double-jointed McPherson and a 5-lever Multilink rear, now a must on every BMW. In addition to the standard shock absorbers, more rigid M Sport shock absorbers are also available, which go hand in hand with the variable ratio power steering and lift-related springs, a novelty introduced on the latest Series 3. By choosing the sportier M240i, then, yes you have entitled to the increased M braking system and the M Sport rear self-locking differential. In addition, on request it is also possible to have electronically controlled M shock absorbers. So the new BMW 2 Series Coupe should still be a blast to driveagile and direct. But which engines will drive it?

Contrary to our predictions, the entry-level 218i’s entry-level 218i 140hp 1.5 three-cylinder engine is not available for now. The engines are all very vigorous, with powers ranging between 184 and 374 hp. The Series 2 range consists of two petrol engines and a diesel engine, equipped with a mild hybrid module. Starting from the turbofans, we have at the base of the range the 220iequipped with the 2.0 4-cylinder B48 with 184 HP and 300 Nm. A ready, vigorous and fluid engine, also capable of consuming the right amount. The performance of this version of access? 0-100 km / h covered in 7.5 seconds. In the face of the entry-level. Later, then. this engine will also be offered in version 230iwith 245 hp and even better performance.

Borderlands 3 also coming to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X

Before reaching the top of the range, let’s see the surprising presence of the a diesel fuel in range. It is as expected of the 220dendowed with the now mythical 2.0 liter 4-cylinder B47 turbodiesel with 190 HP and 400 Nm to which a 48V Mild Hybrid module is added. An engine appreciated for its ability to to consume very little but to offer, if teased, a lot of torque and sporting performance. How sporty? 0-100 km / h is covered in less than 7 seconds, 6.9 to be precise. Is that enough for you?

Finally, we have the current top of the range, the BMW M240i. This fully incorporates the mechanics of the already popular M340i and M440i, including the adorable 3.0 six-cylinder in-line B58 turbocharger with 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This engine, which offers 34 HP more than the previous generation, is currently combined with xDrive all-wheel drive only, with a significant imbalance towards the rear axle. Performance? Thanks to the four-wheel drive, the M240i snaps from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.3 seconds, and then self-limited up to 250 km / h.

Borderlands 3 also coming to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X

For now in addition to the 230i no other engines are expected, with the long-awaited heir of the beloved M2 in the background. We close with a little disappointment for all driving enthusiasts. The new BMW 2 Series Coupé is currently not available with a manual gearbox. The only transmission available in the price list is the beloved automatic Steptronic by ZF with 8-speed torque converter, present as standard on all versions. However, the manual option should soon arrive at least for the two access engines, the 220i and 220d. We’ll see.

How much will the new BMW 2 Series Coupe cost? And when will it hit the market?

This is therefore the new BMW 2 Series Coupe. A sportswoman of other times, which grows in size but is strongly connected to its past, rediscovering emotions and technologies that have made the Casa dell’Elica great. Apart from the decidedly debated and, as we always say, subjective aesthetic question, this new 2 Series is the perfect choice for those looking for the car in the BMW range that is more focused on driving and sensations behind the wheel.

Sony “retires” Killzone.com but is it the end of the series or a new Killzone on PS5?

Today, however, all this can be achieved with the latest ADAS available, well-finished and spacious interiors and lots of practicality. We are not up to the idea of trying this new and renewed BMW 2 Series. To do so, however, we will have to wait a little longer. The launch on the European market is in fact scheduled for the end of 2021, with the first deliveries between the end of the year and the beginning of 2022. In 2023, however, the extreme M2 should arrive. Now the word goes to you: what do you think? Does this new BMW 2 Series Coupé convince you? Let us know below in the comments!
