Alexa updates and now supports more than two languages at the same time

Amazon has updated its Alexa voice assistant to allow it to automatically switch between languages. The update comes along with a series of small additions that have occurred in the last period, increasing the functionality and making Alexa more useful.

Amazon updates Alexa with important news

Alexa first gained the ability to automatically respond to requests in English and other languages in 2019, to foster voice assistant conversations in bilingual households. The functionality was limited to only two languages at a time, while now users can enable a few more languages in the Alexa app. Alexa can speak German, French, Canadian French, Japanese, Spanish, US Spanish and Hindi, all paired with English. Additionally, users can switch languages without opening the app by saying “Alexa, speak Spanish” to set a new primary language or “Alexa, speak Spanish and English” to set a pair to switch.

The latent goals

As already mentioned, Alexa has also acquired the ability to answer what Amazon calls “Latent goals”, even if the function is dedicated to a few countries and for now Italy is missing. Basically this means that Alexa can respond to requests that are “hidden” within a command or that naturally follow an original question. Asking “What is the tea brewing time?” Alexa can assume that the latent goal is setting a tea timer. She will then answer “Five minutes is a good place to start” and then ask “Do you want me to set a timer for five minutes?”.

In addition to these two major changes, Alexa has acquired the ability to include Fire TV device commands in Alexa routines. So you can say, for example, “Alexa, I’m getting something to drink” and Alexa will know to pause what you were watching and turn on the kitchen lights. These are just some of the Alexa skill-oriented tweaks that Amazon has rolled out over the last period.
